Accredited laboratory and standardized testing
We are a laboratory accredited by ENAC in accordance with UNE-EN ISO/IEC 17025:2017 for the industrial sector, with Accreditation No. 1529/LE2806. Our activity focuses on carrying out mechanical tests to evaluate the structural properties of timber.
We perform tests in accordance with the main regulatory standards applicable to structural wood products, including:
- UNE-EN 408 – Sawn timber and glued laminated timber
- UNE-EN 789 – Wood-based panels
- UNE-EN 14080 – Glued laminated timber
- UNE-EN 16351 – Cross-laminated timber

Facilities and testing capabilities
We have an infrastructure prepared to carry out mechanical characterization tests on timber and other structural materials. Our equipment allows us to work with elements up to:
- 10 m in length
- 3 m in height
- 1.6 m in width
We have four testing frames: three rated at 200 kN and one up to 600 kN. They can operate individually or in combination, providing great versatility to configure tests for components and structures of very different geometries and dimensions.
In addition, our infrastructure allows us to develop customized tests tailored to the specific needs of each project or client, whether due to special requirements, non-standard configurations, or advanced methodologies.
Material analysis with advanced technology
Digital Image Correlation (DIC)
The DIC technique is a full-field optical method that enables the measurement of displacements and strains. For its practical application, the PEMADE laboratory is equipped with the non-contact 3D optical measurement system ARAMIS – 3D Motion and Deformation Sensor.
ARAMIS helps to understand the behavior of materials and components and is capable of monitoring tests with high temporal and spatial resolution. This system analyzes, calculates, and documents object deformations, rigid body movements, and the dynamic response of the measured elements.
Non-Destructive Acoustic Techniques (NDT)
This methodology makes it possible to analyze materials without altering their physical, chemical, mechanical, or dimensional properties.
At PEMADE, we have different equipment for applying ultrasound techniques, stress waves, and vibration analysis.
Prototyping and manufacturing: from design to testing
At PEMADE, we also support the development of new structural timber products. We have specialized equipment to manufacture:
- finger joints
- glued elements using a hydraulic press
- specimens and prototypes ready for testing
This equipment is part of grant EQC2018-004773-P, funded by the Spanish State Research Agency (AEI), co-financed by the European Union Structural Funds, as well as by funds from the collaboration agreement signed between USC and the Regional Government of Galicia for the development of strategic R&D&I actions 2019–2020.
